4 Steps To Replace Trimmer Line

It is easy to refill or replace the trimmer line and spools? A string trimmer is an extremely important garden tool that can help you keep your grassy areas neat and clean. However, string trimmer line can often break and new lines may need to be inserted. It is usually wound tightly on a spool and as you use to cut the grass, it continues to wear out till it completely breaks off. New cord is usually fed into the spool, and the spool releases the line to trim the grass. In some cases, the spool itself may need to be replaced completely.

Replacing strimmer line is often the most time-consuming part of yard trimming, using the right techniques to load your trimmer cutting line can significantly save your time you. It is important to know how to reload in three different trimmer head styles: a single line trimmer head, a double-string trimmer head, and speed-feed trimmer head. Here is the helpful step-by-step instructions on how to replace trimmer line for your trimmer head.

Step 1 – Remove the Trimmer Head Spool

replace trimmer line

The first thing you need to do is remove the cap on the string trimmer head. Then the spool will come out. On the spool inside there is a little hole. That’s the place to start trimmer line. You also notice on the spool that there are a couple of arrows. These arrows indicate the directions of the line need to wrap.

Turn off the lawn trimmer or remove the connection to make sure there is no power running through it. Locate the spool retainer right at the bottom of the cutting head. Now turn the cutting head either clockwise or counterclockwise. This can be done by pressing a release button that allows the clip to loosen up and release the spool. Different models have different mechanisms, and if you are unable to understand the mechanism on your trimmer, use the manual to understand how to remove the spool. In general, the direction of loosen up is counterclockwise.

Step 2 – Empty the Spool

replace trimmer line

Once you are able to release the retainer, remove it by pulling the spool away from the head. There may be a spring on the spool. Sometimes, the spring may be present on the cutting head. Try to keep the spring in place. Remove the old lines from the spool as they may be damaged. If the old lines are used up, you simply have to put in a new one.

Step 3 – Insert Trimmer Line and Wind the Line
replace trimmer line

Take up the trimmer line and insert it into the trimmer hole to get started. Start wrapping the line in the direction of the arrows. Try to wrap the line in rows. Straighter you wrapped the line more likely it will feed from the trimmer properly.
If you don’t do it properly now then you have to do it once again while working because wrapping line carelessly can cause the problems.

Once the spool has been emptied, cut the trimmer line to a length of 9 feet. The double-strings trimmer head require two lines. If that is the case, cut two 9-foot long lines. Let the spring face up and hold the spool. There is a small anchor hole into which you can insert the end of a line. This anchor hole is usually located in the side of the spool. For double lines, first install the line that goes into the upper area, before coming to the second line. The spool will have an arrow drawn on it that indicates the direction in which the string should be wound. Wind the entire length of the line into the spool until only about 6 inches of string is remaining. Locate the retention slots. These are usually located in the upper flange of the spool. Press the remaining line into the retention slots. If there are two lines, you can simply insert the other line into the anchor hole located in the lower area. Again, wind the second string until only 6 inches remain. Insert the second line into the other retention slot.

Step 4 – Check the New Line

replace trimmer line

The new line has been installed in the spool. To check the same, simply turn on the trimmer and observe whether the line is trimming in the proper manner. If there is a snag in the string, you may have to remove the spool and wind the line once again, tightly.

In conclusion, it doesn’t have to be difficult to reloading the trimmer line. Use this quick tutorial to replace the line on your string trimmer. Once you’re up to speed, replacing trimmer line this way can be very fast.

11 tips to use string trimmer efficiently

The string trimmer is one of the most common garden tool nowadays, how to use grass trimmer efficiently and safely?

Before you start, refresh yourself on some trimmer safety tips to prevent major injury from happening when using your weed wacker.

#1 Before Starting

string trimmerCheck the weather, if it is raining or the grass is wet, consider doing your trimming another day. Operating your grass trimmer in wet weather is a bad idea for a few reasons. The first being you could slip, slide and fall on the wet grass causing injury to you or damaging your trimmer. Also, wet grass allows the trimmer to not operate at full capacity which can eventually lead to permanent damage and having to replace your trimmer.

Make sure you clear your working area of any wire, metal objects, fence posts or other objects that could be thrown by the line trimmer. Weed trimmers can throw objects up to 50 feet. Keep yourself safe by doing a sweep for any objects that could be thrown before starting your job.

#2 Trimmer Safety Gear?

string trimmer

Protective clothing gives you that extra layer of protection against the flying dirt and debris. Long sleeve pant and shirts protect your arms from flying dirt and debris. Safety glasses, goggles and face masks protect your face from any objects that could ricochet and fly into your face. Another good idea is to wear ear protection to tone down the loud noise of the trimmer.

#3 Adjust to Your Height

string trimmer

Some line trimmers come with shoulder harnesses to help you support the trimmer’s weight while keeping it a safe distance from your body. Others trimmers have adjustable handles. With either design, refer to the owner’s manual to ensure sure you make the proper adjustments for your height.

#4 Choose the Right Trimming Speed

string trimmer

Set your trimmer’s throttle just high enough to cut the plants you’re trimming. If you run your trimmer faster, the line won’t last as long and you have to cope with more noise and vibration without gaining any benefit. For most trimming jobs, you don’t need full throttle; you might need to the full-throttle setting for cleaning brush.

#5 Tap on the Grass

If your model line trimmer plays out more line when you tap the trimming head lightly on the ground, always tap it on the grass, because concrete and asphalt can wear down the trimmer head.

One tap gives you about 2 inches of new line, and that’s usually enough. If you tap the trimmer head multiple times and release too much line, a blade in the cutting shield removes the excess.

#6 Use the Right Trimmer Line

trimmer line

Refill the trimmer head only with the type of cutting line specified in the owner’s manual. Line that’s too thick or too thin doesn’t feed correctly through the ports in the trimmer head. Also, never substitute string, rope or wire for nylon trimmer line. Other materials don’t work properly and break more easily, raising your risk for injury from flying debris.

Experiment with different styles of line to get the best results. Common round line lasts longest and is easiest to load in a trimmer spool. Square (four-sided) and star (five-sided) lines can do a better job slicing through tall and thick grass and weeds, but are also more likely to break.

Trimmers are each made to use certain types and sizes of line. Using a line weight that is not recommended by the operator’s manual can cause stress to the engine allowing it to not operate properly, which can lead to long-term damage. If you don’t have the operator’s manual anymore, take the line off and bring it along when you purchase a new line.

#7 Work in the Right Direction

string trimmerBecause the heads of most line trimmers spin counterclockwise, you get the best results when you sweep the trimmer head from right to left. Check the owner’s manual for your machine or watch the trimmer line at low speed to see which direction the trimmer head turns.

#8 Trim High Grass from Top to Bottom

When cutting grass or weeds that are more than about 8 inches tall, use short strokes to cut the tops of the plants first and then work your way down to the base, instead of trying to cut the whole plant  in one pass.

#9 Use a Blade for Heavy Trimming

string trimmerSwitch out the trimmer line with a metal weed blade attachment when cutting thick grass, heavier weeds and woody brush up to 1/2 inch in diameter. To get the best results with a trimmer blade, keep it sharp and use full throttle. Keep your feet firmly and a comfortable distance apart so you won’t lose your balance if the cutting blade strikes an object and bounces.

#10 Take a Break

take a break

Gas-powered line trimmers produce a lot of vibration that can cause nerve and circulatory damage in your fingers, hands and arms if you use the machine for prolonged periods, especially in cold weather. To prevent injury, take frequent breaks when you’re using a gas trimmer. Wearing gloves may help, too. If you start feeling pain, tingling, numbness, weakness and unexplained chills, stop trimming.

#11 Clean Up & Storage

After you are finished using your string trimmer you must take the proper procedures to keep your weed eater in healthy condition. Follow these steps to ensure that your weed wacker stays in top condition.

Rinse off your weed trimmer and use a brush to get the debris and grass clippings off.

2-cycle string trimmers can be stored horizontally or vertically for convenience as long as fuel does not leak.

Always make sure the engine is off and the spark plug is disconnected before performing any quick repairs.

Conclusion:

Trimming can put the final touches on a great mowing job. However the flying dirt and debris that a string trimmer can produce can turn this simple job into a dangerous one. All you need to do is follow easy safety procedures and your lawn will be looking great in no time.

Five things to make your trimmer line better

To get your trimmer line perform at its very best next season, we list five things for keeping trimmer line in high performance for your reference.Trimmer Line is known as strimmer line, weed eater line, string, weed whacker line. Time is money, and when commercial landscapers find themselves spending more and more time adjusting, replacing or repairing trimmer line, it starts to cost money! One of the easiest ways to keep a string trimmer performing starts with the trimmer line itself.

trimmer line

Proper Storage of Trimmer Line

DON’T store the strimmer line in direct sunlight. A spool of line stored in direct sun runs the risk of UV rays breaking down the string trimmer line, making it brittle. Commercial-grade line will stand up to rocks, weeds and other obstacles, but trimmer line baking in the sun will require more time and attention. The trimmer and especially the trimmer head suffer unnecessary wear when the user calls for more line with the bump feed.

trimmer line
A professional trick for trimmer service is to remove the trimmer line and let it soak in fresh water during the winter season. By doing so, it will maintain its flexibility, handle more strain, and last longer. Trimmer line is made of nylon and can be a blend of polymers to provide the maximum flexibility and needed stiffness. An odd thing about nylon is its affinity for water. Some polymers can absorb as much as 12% of their weight. The water acts like a plasticizer or softener and thus reduces the chance of shatter or cracking in use and actually imparts some stretch to the cord. To some extent, the physical properties of the polymer in the line can be renewed with soaking, but with time this will not work. Old line can’t be truly brought back to it’s original state. Same thing is true of monofilament fishing line.

Generally, the thicker the line the longer you would have to soak it, and 24 hours is not really long enough. Storing it in a plastic bag with a damp cloth is a good idea. In the days of yore, line tended to dry out pretty fast, become brittle and break off easily. Soaking was an old trick from years ago that worked pretty good. Modern line isn’t affected by drying out as badly.

trimmer line

Winding a trimmer line correctly

Properly winding the trimmer head prevents snags, breaks and uneven line dispensing. Wound too tight—or even too loose—one side of the trimmer line will get stuck in the trimmer head. Use the right technique will be more efficient that takes much less time to load trimmer line.

Trying to correct with a bump feed only dispenses line to one side, resulting in an imbalanced trimmer that won’t perform. Evenly wrap the grass trimmer line on the head as straight as possible. Keeping the line smooth without over tightening will ensure the trimmer line dispenses evenly.

Winding a trimmer line correctly is a skill that takes some practice and dexterity to get it just right.  It’s not easy to get it just right, so give yourself some time to learn the best way to do it. Taken apart, the trimmer head looks a bit complex, but after taking it apart and reassembling it several times, you’ll see exactly how it should be done so it works right.

trimmer line
Avoid running the trimmer at full throttle

A trimmer head that spins at full speed generates quite a bit of heat. Line in the trimmer head will melt and rejoin with itself in a process called line welding. Once the line has melted, the trimmer head has to be pulled apart in a time-consuming repair.

Set your trimmer’s throttle just high enough to cut the plants you’re trimming. If you run your trimmer faster, the line won’t last as long and you have to cope with more noise and vibration without gaining any benefit. For most trimming jobs, you don’t need full throttle; you might need to the full-throttle setting for cleaning brush.

trimmer lineCutting zone

Get more power and a cleaner cut when cutting closer to the end of the line. In other words, focus on making cuts as far away from the center of the trimmer head as possible. A more efficient cut means less wear on the trimmer and puts the line to use like it was designed.

Trim High Grass from Top to Bottom

When cutting grass or weeds that are more than about 8 inches tall, use short strokes to cut the tops of the plants first and then work your way down to the base, instead of trying to cut the whole plant  in one pass.

Use a Blade for Heavy Trimming

Switch out the commercial trimmer line with a metal weed blade attachment when cutting thick grass, heavier weeds and woody brush up to 1/2 inch in diameter. To get the best results with a trimmer blade, keep it sharp and use full throttle. Keep your feet firmly and a comfortable distance apart so you won’t lose your balance if the cutting blade strikes an object and bounces.

trimmer line

Color might matter

Selecting the type of trimmer line is a personal preference. With a variety of shapes and sizes, there are numerous options to meet the needs of any operator and/or jobsite. Another consideration when buying trimmer line is its color. Green or darker-colored lines are popular choices because broken pieces disappear into the grass unlike a brighter-colored line.

25 Gardening Tools Make Job Easier

There is a saying goes:to yield twice the result with half the effort. The right gardening tool makes job much easier. As the development of technology of gardening tools, it is lucky to have a handful of inexpensive tools to handle the most common lawn and garden maintenance. All of these tools make perfect housewarming gifts to give — and receive.A garden tool is any one of many tools made for gardens and gardening and overlaps with the range of tools made for agriculture and horticulture. Garden tools can also be hand tools and power tools. Below introduction of 25 gardening tools, which are most used in today’s jobs.

#1 Hand Shovel

shovel-gardening tool

A shovel is a tool for digging, lifting, and moving bulk materials, such as soil, coal, gravel, snow, sand, or ore. Shovels are common tools that are used extensively in agriculture, construction, and gardening.

Most shovels are hand tools consisting of a broad blade fixed to a medium-length handle. Shovel blades are usually made of sheet steel or hard plastics and are very strong. Shovel handles are usually made of wood (especially specific varieties such as ash or maple) or glass-reinforced plastic (fiberglass).

Hand shovel blades made of sheet steel usually have a folded seam or hem at the back to make a socket for the handle. This fold also commonly provides extra rigidity to the blade. The handles are usually riveted in place. A T-piece is commonly fitted to the end of the handle to aid grip and control where the shovel is designed for moving soil and heavy materials. These designs can all be easily mass-produced.

The term shovel is also applied to larger excavating machines called power shovels, which are designed for the same purpose, namely, digging, lifting, and moving material. Modern power shovels are the descendants of steam shovels. Loaders and excavators (such as backhoes) perform very similar work, ethically speaking, but they are not classified as shovels.

Hand shovels have been adapted for many different tasks and environments. They can be optimized for a single task or designed as cross-over or compromise multitasks. Examples are given under “Types”.

Best used for: Planting trees and shrubs and mixing large quantities of dirt, compost and similar materials.

What to look for: Your first shovel should be a tempered-steel round-point shovel. Look for a 44- to 48-inch-long shaft (wood, fiberglass and metal versions are available) that you can grip and lift comfortably.

#2 Garden Spade

garden spade

Although many think of spades and shovels as interchangeable, they’re not the same gardening tool. A spade features a flat, squared-off blade and often is short-handled. It is ideal for edging beds, slicing under sod, and working soil amendments into the garden. In a pinch you can even use a spade to chop ice on frozen sidewalks.

Look for stainless-steel blades — they resist rust. Also, the highest-quality spades usually have steel heads that are firmly connected to the handle. Spades where the blade is riveted to the handle tend to come apart more easily.

The best gardening spades are typically made of carbon or stainless steel with the head and handle socket that are hand forged (not stamped) from a single piece of thick metal. Socket handle connections are very strong, but if you want the ultimate in strength, a strapped handle connection are considered to be the strongest available. Also, with the larger spades, look for one that has treads or shoe protectors on the top of the blade.

#3 Garden Fork

garden fork

There has different garden forks listed as below:

Garden (English) Forks (aka One Serious Fork), this fork is for the soil, which is undisturbed and/or clay or otherwise tough, hard soil. The garden fork has four long square, super strong tines that end with a diamond points for easy soil penetration. The best garden forks are forged from a single piece of carbon steel and have either a riveted socket or strapped handle connection. (the strapped handle connection is considered the strongest handle connection available.) Great for breaking up the toughest of soils, double digging and if needed, digging up root crops.

Digging and Spading Forks These forks are usually a little lighter in weight and have four triangular shaped tines with a flat facing the front of the fork for lifting. With their flat faced tines, these forks are good for digging in loamy, sandy or loose soil, aerating, mixing in nutrients, turning your soil in the spring and harvesting potatoes and other root vegetables.

Compost Fork The compost fork or pitchfork usually has four or more long slender, pointed tines that are turned up slightly for scooping or moving loose material without bending. Great for turning your compost pile or moving loose materials. Note: Manure forks look very similar and work very well as a compost fork thou the tines are not turned up as much.

Border and Shrubbery Forks These forks are just smaller versions of the workhorse garden fork. Despite their smaller size, these border and shrubbery forks are hard working garden tools. This fork is great for working in tight spaces like beds and between plantings and for the smaller gardener, a garden fork that is not so big and exhausting to use.

Potato Forks There can be a little confusion with what is a “potato fork” as different garden tool makers call completely different looking fork, a “potato fork.” Some look just like a digging or spading fork with the flat faced tines for lifting the potatoes from the soil. In fact, some of the better garden tool maker’s “potato forks” are made with the same strengths as their heavy-duty forks. The other type of potato fork you might encounter has many more (up to 10) slender tines that have blunt ends so as not to damage the root crops. This type of potato fork is generally for lifting of the root crops, not digging.

Broadfork Although very different looking than a traditional garden fork, the two-handled broadfork does a lot of the same chores, only on larger scale. With two hardwood handles fitted about shoulder width on a steel horizontal bar and 4 to 6 long tines; the broadfork is generally used for reworking ground that has already been broken up. This garden tool does a lot of work in a shorter time.

As with all garden tools; you can find most of these garden forks in all price ranges. The solid forged tools may cost more initially, but the quality, strength, warranty and the fact that you’ll have a garden tool that you can pass down to the next generation far outweigh the cost. Plus, you’re not tossing a bent garden tool into the landfill every couple of years.

#4 Bypass pruners

pruners

Pruning is a horticultural and silvicultural practice involving the selective removal of parts of a plant, such as branches, buds, or roots. Reasons to prune plants include deadwood removal, shaping (by controlling or directing growth), improving or maintaining health, reducing risk from falling branches, preparing nursery specimens for transplanting, and both harvesting and increasing the yield or quality of flowers and fruits. The practice entails targeted removal of diseased, damaged, dead, non-productive, structurally unsound, or otherwise unwanted tissue from crop and landscape plants. Specialized pruning practices may be applied to certain plants, such as roses, fruit trees, and grapevines. It is important when pruning that the tree’s limbs are kept intact, as this is what helps the tree stay upright. Different pruning techniques may be deployed on herbaceous plants than those used on perennial woody plants. Hedges, by design, are usually (but not exclusively) maintained by hedge trimming, rather than by pruning.

Pruning shears, also called hand pruners (in American English), or secateurs, are a type of scissors for use on plants. They are strong enough to prune hard branches oftrees and shrubs, sometimes up to two centimeters thick. They are used in gardening, agriculture, farming, flower arranging, and nature conservation, where fine-scale habitat management is required.

Loppers are a larger, two-handed, long-handled version for branches thicker than pruning shears can cut.

#5 Loppers

loppers

Loppers are a type of scissors used for pruning twigs and small branches, like secateurs with very long handles. They are the largest type of manual garden cutting tool.

They are usually operated with two hands, and with handles typically between 30 centimetres (12 in) & 91 centimetres (36 in) long to give good leverage. Some have telescopic handles which can be extended to a length of two metres, in order to increase leverage and to reach high branches on a tree. Loppers are mainly used for the pruning of tree branches with diameters less than 5 centimetres (2 in). Some of the newer lopper designs have a gear or compound lever system which increases the force applied to the blades, or a ratchet drive.

#6 Hand Cultivator

hand cultivator
A hand cultivator is a gardening tool that is used to turn the soil where plants and vegetables are planted, or it can be used to remove weeds from soil in a garden. For small flower or vegetable gardens, a hand cultivator can be used like a small plow to turn the earth and dig the planting rows. Using a hand cultivator is not difficult, and this easy to follow step-by-step guide will show you everything you need to know in order to properly use the tool. Hand cultivators are very useful for removing small weeds and roughing up the soil for seeding, both in containers and in garden beds. Look for a model that is either one piece of forged or molded steel, or one that has a steel head that is securely attached to a wooden handle.

#7 Hori-Hori Knife

hori hori knife

It’s a Japanese gardening tool with a concave center (like a trowel), and a sharp, serrated edge. Would you like to see what this nifty gadget can do? Hori-Hori knife which in Japanese translates to “dig-dig”. The Hori-Hori can be used to perform a host of gardening tasks including digging, planting bulbs or perennials, weeding, cutting through roots, rough pruning and even chipping ice. Hori Hori knife help gardeners to face the never ending task of weeding.

This was such a versatile tool, good for digging, planting bulbs, cutting through tough roots and even stabbing slugs!  It is an All Purpose Knife, Garden Knife, Bonsai Tree Tool, Soil Knife, Trowel, Garden Weeder-Loved By Hunters, Hikers, Campers, Metal Detecting or Fishers.

#8 Garden Trowel

garden-trowel

A trowel is one of several similar hand tools used for digging, smoothing, or otherwise moving around small amounts of viscous or particulate material.

In gardening, a trowel is a tool with a pointed, scoop-shaped metal blade and a handle. It is used for breaking up earth, digging small holes, especially for planting and weeding, mixing in fertilizer or other additives, and transferring plants to pots. Garden trowel makes most tasks that involves soil easier. If you don’t have a trowel, save yourself some misery and time and buy a tool that works. You can buy a trowel for under $10, but that trowel will have a duller blade that’s harder to push into the soil, and it will make dividing perennials a hellish chore.

A garden trowel is a garden hand tool designed for small jobs like transplanting, digging holes, and mixing soil.  Garden trowels come in a wide variety of styles and sizes, and many gardeners like to keep a few garden trowels of different sizes in order to be prepared for any job.  Since we will use a garden trowel often, find those that feel natural in your hand.

#9 Garden Hoe

hoe

A hoe is an ancient and versatile agricultural hand tool used to shape the soil, control weeds, clear soil, and harvest root crops. Hoes are also used to mix things like concrete, and to dig holes. Shaping the soil can be piling soil around the base of plants (hilling), creating narrow furrows (drills) and shallow trenches for planting seeds and bulbs. Weed control with a hoe can be by agitating the surface of the soil or by cutting foliage from the roots, and clearing soil of old roots and crop residues. Hoes for digging and moving soil are used harvesting root crops such as potatoes.

There are many types of hoes of quite different appearances and purposes. Some can perform multiple functions. Others are intended for a specific use.Several different types of hoes are available. Some have heads with a flat blade, and others feature a pointed blade that gets in between small plants more easily.

There are two main classes of agricultural hoe: draw hoes for shaping, and scuffle hoes for surface weed control.

#10 Leaf Rake

leaf rake

Also a long-handled tool, this rake has multiple “springy” tines that make it ideal for raking leaves and other debris off the lawn. It’s also the best tool for cleaning spent plants and debris out of the landscape beds, especially at winter’s end.Metal and plastic tines last longer than bamboo ones. To facilitate quicker regrowth, lightly rake the turf with a leaf rake, not a garden rake. Raking will remove some of the dead, blighted leaf blades and facilitate turf-grass recovery from snow mold.it’s a good idea to lightly rake grass in those vulnerable areas to fluff it and allow light and air to penetrate A leaf rake will work fine.

#11 Garden Rake

garden rake

It is used for for moving soil or smoothing mulch, or for raking up thick, matted layers of leaves. Use a stiff garden rake to work the soil around the roots and install the new plants farther away from the trunk where the roots aren’t as thick and will be less likely to be disturbed.

Some yard rakes have tines which are spring-loaded. You will be able to use these around plants without damaging them. Although a narrower rake will be able to clean around plants more easily, a wider rake will make a world of difference when raking leaves. Many of the newest rakes on the market have ergonomic handles. These handles are designed so that the least possible stress is put on the back during raking.

You will need to use a garden rake to break up chunks that form in the soil as well as to smooth over the top of your garden to prepare it for planting. The configuration of the rakes steel head is important. It needs to have teeth that are sharp enough to break up dirt clods and a flat back that you can use to tamp down dirt. A bow rake has longer, curved tines that make it easier to do raking jobs in hard soil.

#12 Watering Can

watering can

Plants need water to keep cool, pump minerals up to their leaves and grow. And in many regions and many seasons, they can fend for themselves getting water.
Before you touch that hose spigot, however, do what you can to help plants eke the most out of natural rainfall and water. Add compost, leaves and other organic materials to your soil to help it retain water. Laid on top of the ground as mulch, these materials slow evaporation from the surface; they also keep the surface loose so water seeps in rather than runs off. Weeds suck water from the soil, so rip them out to leave more water for your plants. And finally, contour the surface of sloping ground with low mounds or terraces to catch and hold water.

Buy a galvanized steel watering can. These can be found at high-end nurseries and online. They are great for spot watering during the hot summer months. They last a life time and no garden is complete without one.

#13 Garden Hose

gardening hose

Garden hose is one of the most important gardening tools that we use, because it helps us to prove the water for our plants and flowers.

Garden hoses are commonly green or often black, but can also be found in a variety of other colors. Garden hoses are typically made of extruded synthetic rubber or soft plastic, often reinforced with an internal web of fibers. As a result of these materials, garden hoses are flexible and their smooth exterior facilitates pulling them past trees, posts and other obstacles. Garden hoses are also generally tough enough to survive scraping on rocks and being stepped on without damage or leaking.

Most garden hoses are not rated for use with hot water, and their packaging will often specify whether or not this is the case. Leaving non-reinforced hoses in the hot sun while pressurized can cause them to burst.

Compact hose is great for watering pots on a deck or patio, this plastic hose practically coils itself up after use and weighs about half as much as a traditional model.

#14 Watering Wand

watering wandUse a hose, drip irrigation or place the watering wand of your hose at the base of the plant without wetting the leaves. Water the soil, not the plant, using a watering wand, drip irrigation or a soaker hose so less water is lost to evaporation. Use a watering wand. A watering wand allows you to direct the water to the soil at the base of each plant so the roots can be soaked while wetting the the foliage as little as possible. The wand gets the water where it’s most needed without wasting any.

#15 Sprinkler

garden sprinklerGarden sprinkler systems have a huge role to play in nourishing your home lawn.Connect your  sprinkler to a watering hose and you can give parts of your garden or landscape a deep soaking without having to stand there for long periods or make multiple trips with a watering can. Better yet, attach your sprinkler to an automatic timer. It will turn on and off and you won’t have to lift a finger. Sprinklers that have multiple spray options offer more versatility.

#16 Work Gloves

nitrile gloves

Different types of gloves protect hands from various injuries, so keep several pairs around. Choose leather or cotton gloves to avoid blisters from tasks such as sawing, pruning, and shoveling. Wide-cuffed or long gloves coated with nitrile or plastic protect your wrists and forearms when you’re working with thorny plants, such as roses. Latex or rubber gloves keep your hands dry.

Select garden gloves that have reinforced knuckles and padding in the palm. They’re a little more expensive but do a much better job of protecting your hands from fatigue and injury.

#17 Garden Kneeler and Kneepads

garden kneeler

How to buy the best trimmer line

As the developing of line trimmers, the trimmer line or strimmer line or weed eater string is well developed nowadays, and the quality and prices are vary in the market, different type of trimmer lines have the advantages and disadvantages. Choosing the correct nylon trimmer line is the key to ensuring the effectiveness of a grass trimmer & edge. Incorrect selection can result in reduced productivity, accelerated equipment wear, and added materials costs. Some consumers might be very confused about the right and best strimmer line to buy and use, well, I will introduce the quality string trimmer line and teach you how to buy and use the best one from China. trimmer line

Knowing the right size of trimmer line for your line trimmer

There are three main diameter sizes of trimmer lines for different works in your garden, depending on how large of a yard and how thick your weeds are. Before you go and buy a string trimmer line, check your string trimmer to see what it is capable of holding, as most can only go handle a certain size. Refer to the product handbook if you’re unsure. Okay, now let’s get onto the actual lines.

trimmer lines for cutting

Light Work: 0.065 inches – 0.080 inches, good for residential front and back lawns with lighter weeds. The small jobs around the house.
Medium Work: 0.085 inches – 0.105 inches, good for larger back and front lawns or lawns with heavier weeds and light commercial work. It is perfect for your bigger gardens where you have bigger weeds, and is often used for commercial areas as well.
Heavy work: 0.110+ inches, good for Industrial landscaping, large estates, large yards, huge gardens, golf courses and other areas that need a large amount of trimming.

Different shapes of trimmer lines

trimmer line shape

Round trimmer line

The rounded shaped trimmer lines are for everyday home use, there is not job too small for the rounded line. Round Trimmer line is the standard, basic shape that won’t wear down as quickly as other trimmer lines. It is better for trimmer to trim grass edges or get rid of weeds around a residential yard, in other words, it is ideal for lighter, residential use with minimum weeds. It is also used for a minimum amount of weeds that don’t require a lot of time to cut. The round string line breaks less and is more durable against concrete, trees and etc. This is also the easiest trimmer line to replace in your trimmer.

Round trimming line is the line you’re going to get in most residential grade, lightweight weed eating devices. It is the most common and is most suitable for light to standard jobs. It lasts longer than other weed eater string types, and is more likely to withstand contact with concrete, metals, and other hard materials that you may come in contact with while using your weed eater. Naturally, the shaft of this weed eater line is completely round and circular in shape.

This type of line is generally lasts a lot longer if you use it for the smaller stuff, tends to be the cheapest and easiest to line to replace. The round trimmer line produced by us is made from sturdy nylon components and is great for homeowner/residential use.

Multi-sided trimmer line

Multi-sided trimmer line is for the landscaping professional, and made to stick on the end of high-wheel trimmers. The ribbed like design is to increase the ability to cut through weeds and big grassy areas, with no dramas.

There are lines that have multiple sides to them-are more suited to a commercial job with a large amount that needs to be cut. These lines tend to stay “sharper” for a longer period of time, allowing you to get a much cleaner cut the first time around. This is important when doing a professional job, as you won’t want to waste any time going back over anything you’ve already cut once before (unless you want to waste a lot of time). Plus, your customers will be satisfied with the pristine, clean cut that you leave behind. This isn’t as important with rounded trimmer lines, as mentioned previously, because the rounded, circular lines are typically used for non-commercial purposes.

If you have a larger yard, thicker weeds, or if you use the trimmer for commercial use, the multi-sided trimmer lines are the perfect option, and they are best used for medium sized jobs with heavier weeds or larger lawns.

Multi-sided trimmer lines have multiple sides that produce a cleaner cut. These lines commonly come in the shape of a star, square or pentagon.

Square trimmer line

A square shape as the name hints is a square line. This type of design makes it perfect to cut down the heavy weeds. and it will knock down anything you put in front of it. The edges of the square trimmer line allow it to cleanly slice through grass and heavy weeds. This line is great for professionals who have to tackle dense weeds on a daily basis.

The commercial square trimmer line has been specially designed to prevent the outer layers from welding so easily, you can knock this line against rocks and trees and it will come out fine.

Our square trimmer line is engineered and co-extruded and incorporates a high-strength inner core with a weld-resistant outer layer for long-lasting characteristics. Fits all standard trimmer heads.

Main features of our square shape strimmer trimmer line: Added rigidity for improved cutting; Ultra weld resistance; Improved impact strength; Color coded by diameter size.

Serrated blades have a similar use- they are mostly used for quality, commercial grade jobs. Serrated lines act like a long string of knives or teeth that easily rip through weeds and can easily rip through the absolute toughest jobs in minimal time.

Best for: Medium to large size jobs for commercial jobs, ideal for landscapers.
These trimmer lines slice through heavy weeds and thick grass quickly and efficiently, which will save your time. However, multi-sided trimmer lines break easy when they come in contact with stones, fences, curbs, sidewalks and etc.

Twisted trimmer line

Your spiral shaped string trimmer line is best used in commercial areas, where you have noise limitations.

These twisted trimmer line is perfect for heavy and thick weeds. If you use trimmer for rugged commercial use, then, a twisted trimmer line is the right product for you.

Twisted Trimmer line adds strength, improved efficiency and reduces noise levels. This line is a step up from the round style line and offers durability when hitting concrete or hard surfaces. This trimmer line can reduce trimmer vibrations and noise levels while giving you a clean, even cut.

Spiral shaped lines work best with electric and battery powered string. Twisted grass trimmer strings are like multiple round lines wrapped around each other. These lines have the benefits of a round line, like being more resistant to hard surfaces, as well as having the added benefit of better weed cutting. There are claims made that these lines reduce the amount of vibration in your weed trimmer and that they tend to be more quiet, but so far I have not personally seen that to be the case. Twisted lines tend to be the most durable lines out there, so if you want something that will last, then this is the choice for you!

This spiral string used an advanced spiral design to give the user a cleaner cut, and works well on heavier foliage. I managed to hit the pavement a few times and the even the edges of the road using this string, and it never split or broke off like other spiral lines I’ve used in the past.

Best for: heavy duty jobs, where you have noise restrictions.

Serrated Trimmer Line

With serrated edges that act like teeth, this line quickly saws through thicker grass blades, while leaving a cleaner trim.

Serrated edge trimmer line is best used for your property which have a lot of weeds and commercial use. Serrated trimmer lines are used for heavier jobs with thicker weeds and more area to cover.

With edges that act like teeth or a kitchen knife, this serrated line can quickly saw through grass blades and thick leaves, leaving a cleaner trim. This trimmer line has extra cutting power and can be used for medium-heavy jobs. A serrated trimmer line can cut through weeds easily and quickly to keep your trimming time at a minimum.

Trimmer Line Materials

It is important to know what materials the strimmer line is made from. In this review, we will be going over a couple different types of lines (the most common) nylon, and titanium string trimmer lines.

Nylon- nylon trimmer lines are the very common materials. They are a hardened, synthetic monofilament that works well in nearly all weed cutting situations. (These are your go-to weed trimming lines). That, coupled with the correct shape and line diameter, makes for a great weed cutting line. With the development 3D printers, nylon string could be easily made from home in the near future and will be perfect for your gardening trimmer tool!

titanium trimmer line
Titanium- A second, and perhaps not as well known line type is titanium. Titanium lines are amazingly efficient and are sort of a new thing in the string trimming world. I suspect that more and more people will start using titanium lines due to their superior cutting power.

The titanium string trimmer lines the “nex-gen”, if you like of string trimmer lines. A titanium line performs better on all levels.

Faster acceleration, reduces fuel consumption, lowers noise and has level flight characteristics. It can fit all standard trimmers too.

However, they do cost a bit more, and using them is kind of overkill. You probably won’t need to ever use a titanium line unless you just want to cut up things you probably shouldn’t cut up. Still, titanium lines are fantastic and could be the future of string trimming lines.

In conclusion, now you have a brief overview of various types string trimmer lines and what they’re best for. It won’t be difficult to buy the best trimmer line for your line trimmers.

Keep in mind that it’s important to find the right line for the right job, to get the right finish on the property you’re working on. We are always working on developing the best trimmer line for the best use of different kinds of line trimmers. Please contact us for more information.

How to find the best string trimmer?

What is string trimmer/grass trimmer?

A string trimmer, also called a “line trimmer“, “weed-wacker“, a “weed eater” or (in the UK) a “strimmer”. It is a device for cutting grass and other small plants Thong (clothing) It is one of the most popular and useful garden tool, which followed by a very wide range of power tools, including cultivators, weed trimmer, Irrigation sprinklers, hedge trimmers, lawn aerators, leaf sweepers etc. Vegetation, individual plants can be cut at the base using a steel blade or string trimmer and the remaining portions sprayed with herbicide to prevent new growth. A weed eater must use trimmer line for working.

Buying tips for trimmer

Before buying a grass trimmer, there are several things needed to consider. Firstly, the cutting width is reply on the size of your garden: the bigger the width, the more grass the trimmer can clear in one go. Secondly, the power source of string trimmer. Electric models are easy to handle, but an electric plug should be required nearby, while petrol models are more powerful, but are noisier and heavier. Increasingly, many gardeners are choosing battery-operated strimmers. These can be easy to use, though require frequent charging.

Finally, most trimmers work by using a trimmer line (nylon line) that is spun very fast to cut through the grass. Pay attention to whether you’re buying an automatic line feed trimmer, which releases the line as you need it, or a bump feed trimmer, which will usually require you to tap the trimmer’s head against the ground when you want more line. You can also buy a manual feed line trimmer, where you have to pull out the line yourself, though these are less common. All have advantages and disadvantages, so your final choice will depend on what you find easiest to handle.

battery operated strimmers Battery-operated strimmers (one type of cordless line trimmer, is also called battery line trimmer) are all the rage these days: not only does the lack of a cable mean you can garden as far away from a power socket as you like, they’re often quieter and safer too.The battery-operated strimmers are usually light, and can trim over 1,000 metres with one charge. There’s also a height-adjustable handle, which extends anywhere between a certain range.

Advantages: Cordless (convenient to go anywhere),and relatively quite

Disadvantages: Limited power

So it is important to find a line trimmer with big battery. There is extremely powerful battery which can conveniently be fully charged within an hour. Even better, it has several modes so you can control your power usage – switch on the turbo mode if you’re battling particularly tough grass, or or switch to eco if you want to get the most out of your charger. Cuts all types of grass with ease. Cordless trimmers give you more mobility than corded models. Lithium-ion batteries rated from 36 to 80 volts provide more power and runtime than lower voltage batteries, letting you handle larger jobs. Charge time for these batteries vary but range from 30 minutes for fast charges to 3 hours for standard charges.
The lifespan of battery (battery life) should be noted by customer as well, usually, the longer the better.

The compatibility of batteries of some cordless trimmers can also power equipment such as hedge trimmers, mowers, leaf blowers and chainsaws. You can use one battery while others are charging, as a result, if one battery which runs out of power, you don’t have to stop the job, just replaced with another battery.

electric strimmers

Electric trimmers (electric weed wackers) are powered by mains electricity and therefore have long cables. While they are fairly inexpensive, the cable means that you can only work close to a power source, which can cause problems in larger gardens.

Electric trimmers are simple to start and maintain than gas models. They also run cleaner and quieter.

Electric trimmers supply constant power without recharging and without the weight of a battery. For a large size garden,a corded electric trimmer requires an extension cord, which limits the size of the work area and might be difficult to manage if you have trees or other obstacles in your yard,it is important to follow the device manufacturer’s specifications for a suitable extension cord for safe operation.

Advantage: No worry about the power, cheap to buy, cleaner and quieter

Disadvantage: Inconvenient to move (Not for big size garden)

strimmer

The petrol-operated models(Gas powered trimmer),another type of cordless line trimmer, is also called gas line trimmer.

Gas trimmers tend to be heavier and louder than their electric counterparts, but that doesn’t necessarily mean electric is better.

The petrol-operated trimmer is a seriously powerful machine. It is able to cut the grass and weed in anywhere, you don’t need to worry about the power. Gas trimmers are a good choice for large areas and heavier growth. You need consider about the strimmer gives a neat cut and, if the handles are adjustable. The petrol trimmer is usually heavier than the electric version, so the buyer need try the petrol trimmer whether he can hold it comfortable. Most gas trimmers designed with a pull-start, however, some models will start with a powered device that require the consumer purchase separately so that you don’t have to use the pull cord. The right fuel is important for the petrol-operated string trimmers, and can only handle certain levels of ethyl alcohol, it is usually easy to learn when follow the manufacturer’s requirements and read Fueling Outdoor Power Equipment for tips on keeping your machine properly fueled. Noise is a kind of problem of petrol trimmer,  if the gas trimmer is low on noise and vibration, which will be better.

Advantage: Powerful- long runtimes, cordless-mobility,easy to move), heavy-duty work

Disadvantage: Noisy, relatively uncomfortable to hold

String Trimmer Mowers

string trimmer mowers

Trimmer mowers, which work well in areas that are difficult to reach, are a good choice for rough terrain and thick brush. To compare with the handheld trimmers, Strimmer mowers are perfect for rugged areas in which you can’t use a regular mower or where vegetation is too thick for traditional string trimmers. These gas-powered mowers feature a trimmer head mounted on a wheeled body, offering power, mobility and a larger cutting area than handheld models.

How to find the best trimmer mowers?

First, wheels, they should be large enough to make the string trimmer mowers more stable on uneven surfaces. The wheels are made of hardened plastic or a Never Flat material so you won’t get a flat tire working away from your shed.Cutting Width of wheeled trimmer is 22″ so you can cut a lot at once. Push this trimmer into a patch of weeds and you’ll be done in no time.

Engines

All wheeled trimmers are powered by similar engines.

The more power the trimmer has, the heavier it tends to be. You can purchase either 2-cycle or 4-cycle engine trimmers. 2-cycle engines are lighter and easier to maintain, but need a special mixture of gas to operate. 4-cycle engines are heavier and more expensive, but many 4-cycle engines can be used with regular gas. Check before purchasing if a 4-cycle engine can use regular gas or not.  4-cycle engines (like a lawn mower), which require oil changes and other simple maintenance to keep them running smoothly.

Another common feature on all wheeled trimmer engines is a recoil starter. Like a lawn mower, recoil start requires you to pull a starter rope to turn the engine over and get it going.

Replacement Line
Because these trimmers are capable of tackling tough brush, you may find the trimmer line breaks more often.

Your best bet is to have some replacement line, which comes in a variety of diameters and lengths, depending on the job and trimmer.

In conclusion, it is not difficult to find the best string trimmer for your garden, it is depending on the size of your garden & lawn, the power source for the weed eater, the way you use the line trimmer. I believe as the development of the big battery, the Battery-operated trimmer will become more and more popular and more useful for big garden.
